Efter åren hos Johannes Hansen startade Wegner 1943 en egen designstudio i Gentofte och hade flera intressanta inredningsprojekt, bland annat tillsammans med Børge Mogensen. I egen regi konstruerade han 1944 sin första ”China Chair” – en serie inspirerad av den kinesiska kejsarens troner.
