Abstract. In the Uranouchi Inlet, which has a commercial fishery of littleneck clam Ruditapes philippinarum, potentially toxigenic species of Dinophysis acuminata showed an annual occurrence except for the summer of 2000–2002. We established an isolate of Dinophysis acuminata from New York waters and conducted controlled culture experiments to assess the effects of nutrients on the growth of this dinoflagellate with and without its prey, Mesodinium rubrum. Dinophysis was found to rapidly assimilate 15N-labeled ammonium and urea, AND to a far lesser extent nitrate. Dinophysis acuta was more susceptible to photodamage under high light intensities (370–650 μmol photons · m −2 · s −1) than D. acuminata but survived better with low light (10 μmol photons · m −2 · s −1) and to a prolonged period (28 d) of darkness.

Dinophysis acuminata and Teleaulax spp. were restricted to the upper 9 m but M. rubrum was found down to 20 m depth. This study offers circumstantial evidence for the interdependency between the three taxa in nature.
pulses, Dinophysis acuminata populations were found aggregated in near-surface patches (up to 8 x103 cells L 1) lo-cated in the warmer (15-18 C) surface (0-6 m) waters. In contrast, on 13 June 2005, when downwelling conditions occurred, D. acuminata reached its highest concentration (9 x 103 cells L 1) and spread in a near surface layer through-
Where does Dinophysis live? Dinophysis is commonly found in the Peel-Harvey Estuary, as well as the Swan Dinophysis species Dinophysis acuminata Name Synonyms Dinophysis boehmii Paulsen, 1949 Dinophysis borealis Paulsen, 1949 Dinophysis ellipsoides Kof., 1907 Dinophysis paulsenii Woosz., 1928 Homonyms Dinophysis acuminata Claparède & Lachmann While toxic species of Dinophysis such as D. acuminata have a single gene for LSU rRNA, non-toxic species seem to have two distinct classes of LSU rRNA. The difference between these two classes was a 70 bp deletion, indicating the shorter product might be a pseudogene. Dinophysis cultures were established from water samples collected in the Galician Rías Baixas (NW Spain): D. acuminata (VGO1349) was isolated in July 2016 from Ría de Vigo and D. acuta (VGO1065) in October 2010 from Ría de Pontevedra. The apparent inability of Dinophysis to take up nitrate suggests the existence of incomplete nitrate-reducing and assimilatory pathways, in line with the paucity of nitrate transporter homologs in the D. acuminata reference transcriptome. Dinophysis acuta is a photosynthetic species with yellow chloroplasts (Dodge, 1982, Larsen and Moestrup, 1992).
Potentially toxic species identified in the Chesapeake include Dinophysis acuminata, D. acuta, D. fortii, D. caudata and D. norvegica. Toxicity Okadaic acid and dinophysistoxins, produced by Dinophysis spp., can accumulate in filter-feeders, such as bivalve shellfish, and adversely affect human health and marine life.
